To understand the world of trailers, we offer a breakdown of the most common abbreviations.
This is the maximum load that can be loaded in a vehicle or trailer.
It is therefore the difference between the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and the UW (Unladen Weight).
Sometimes used, actually corresponds to GVW.
Sometimes used, corresponds to UW (unladen weight). The unladen mass is indicated on the registration certificate in box G1.
This is the maximum load you can load in your trailer. To calculate it, subtract the Gross Vehicle Weight from the Gross Train Weight (GTW – GVW).
This is the maximum authorized weight for a vehicle or trailer, this time with its load, including the driver and passengers. The GVW is indicated on the registration certificate (in box F2), as well as on the manufacturer's plate. You must not exceed this maximum authorized weight when loading your vehicle.
This is the maximum authorized weight for a combination of vehicles (tractor + trailers). The GTW is indicated on your vehicle's registration certificate in box F3.
This is the total combined weight (vehicles + load + passengers).
To summarize: the total weight of the combination (towing vehicle + driver/passenger(s) + luggage + trailer + towed vehicle) must not exceed the towing vehicle's GTW.
This is the weight recorded on a scale during weighing (in case of inspection), this weight must absolutely not exceed the GTW.
It corresponds to the weight of a vehicle with full tank (fuel, coolant, etc.), its tools and spare wheel, but without load, driver or passengers. The UW is indicated on the Registration Certificate in box G1.
